American vs. European ears

Hey guys! This is MyTwoCents adding a little flavor to the launch of Fresh Ears. Warning: I tend to be gossipy and a bit whimsical with my thoughts, but ultimately I share the same passion behind music and love to discuss.

So back to the lecture at hand: American vs. European ears

As you may or may not know, MTV's Europe Music Awards popped off in Liverpool, UK a coupla days ago. To be honest, I never paid attention to those awards but this year there were some cool performances so I thought I'd check it out. Estelle, Kanye and Beyonce were of course some of the "American" acts. Visit MTV.CO.UK to read up on all the shinanigans.

The list of winners are below:
Most Addictive Track: P!nk ‘So What’
Video Star: 30 Seconds To Mars ‘A Beautiful Lie'
Headliner: Tokio Hotel
Urban: Kanye West
Rock Out: 30 Seconds To Mars
Artists Choice: Lil Wayne
Act of 2008: Britney Spears
Ultimate Legend: Sir Paul McCartney
Album of the Year: Britney Spears Blackout
Europe’s Favourite Act: Emre Aydin (Turkey)
New Act: Katy Perry
Best Act Ever: Rick Astley

Ok, so I took a look at this list and I'm not gonna lie...I was a bit confused. How the heck did Britney Spears win not 1 but 2 awards?? Blackout eventually sold in the U.S but I didn't think it was award-worthy. Or is it? I have always wondered why some artist do better overseas, as opposed to their home country (oh, Hi Amerie. Heyy Kelly Rowland). What do they hear over there that is contrasting to what we hear?? I mean, Kelly Rowland seriously chunked the deuces to the US and has set up shop in London for the past year because they clearly spin her ish more than over here. Interesting. So here's the question I pose to you music heads: What's the difference between American and European ears??

  1. Interesting...
You can cut Europe in two parts, the East is more Electro Pop and the West is more like the US.
Yes Britney Spears is maybe the exception, I think people are interested in Britney because of her life full of scandals, she was in every paparazzi magazines the last years in Europe so people listen to her music too, it helps her promote her music not in the good way but this is life.
People are ready to be naked to sell one album, you can easily find a female artist naked in a music video but hardly find quality in the lyrics.
But we can talk about this during hours, eveybody have his point of view on the question...
